On Mockery Ethics

Yesterday I posted a joke that mocks Trump supporters based on the idea that the word supporter is also used to mean jock strap. Then this morning I woke up feeling a little guilty about it because I remembered that I actually have family members and friends who are Trump supporters, and so my joke is really mocking these people too.

But then I found the meme shown here recommending suicide to those of us who object to Trump’s values and policies and I realized that the fact that my own joke doesn’t advocate suicide or really any sort of physical violence against its target makes it at least much more ethical than the one that the one shown here.

Now, that’s not to say that my own joke shouldn’t or can’t be questioned on ethical grounds, but however unethical it might turn out to be following such an inquiry, I’m pretty sure it will be found somewhat less unethical than the one shown above.

What do you think?
