Shame vs. Pride: A Basic Moral Dilemma

Suppose I take a look at my life and I can see that I’ve been selfish. Maybe I wonder “am I really doing enough for others?” and my gut answers “hmmm, probably not.”

Should I feel proud of myself for taking this critical first step toward advancing the causes of social justice? Or should I feel ashamed because I didn’t do it sooner?

Next, suppose I take the next step and volunteer some of my time, say, or money to some specific cause — autism, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, civil rights, etc. Again, should I feel proud of myself for taking this critical next step toward advancing the causes of social justice? Or should I feel ashamed because I haven’t volunteered even more of my time or money?

What do you think?
